One of the hosts of new medical sciences, Pharmacology can be defined as the study of the effects of the drugs on the function of living systems. Pharmacology is the main subject of 3rd professional MBBS. It includes the study of major classes of clinically important drugs currently used in medical practice, fundamental principles of drug action and various mechanisms by which drug can mediate their pharmacological effect, principles of pharmacokinetics that underlay the absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination of the drug in the body, understanding of rationale behind designing different dosage regimens of particular drug in specific patient populations, understanding of patient characteristics that can affect the response of the drug and undesirable effects of the drug. The department of Pharmacology has competent and skillful faculty members striving hard to achieve the highest level of excellence under able guidance of Dr. Naima Javed. A good physician has to be a good pharmacologist. Students gain a thorough knowledge of medications, such as various routes of administration, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, adverse drug reactions and dosage schedules. With well-qualified and experienced faculty guiding them, students can look forward to an interesting learning experience.
Pharmacology Department has fully equipped laboratories that provide the resources for practical training in experimental pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and pharmacy. The lab has a host of equipment to include the Polygraph, Kymographs, Organ Baths, analytical instruments and gadgets etc.
The pharmacology museum has a collection of all possible salts that are used in the preparation of drugs. It also has samples of drugs by Generic as well as by Trade names. The department of Pharmacology at AFMDC aims:
Department of Pharmacology, AFMDC has two offices, one well equipped laboratory and auditorium with modern teaching facilities like projector, multimedia. Lecture hall has got seating capacity for almost 150 students. The laboratory has the capacity for more than 60 students. Department is also provided with computer facility in order to maintain the record and preparing lectures. There is a museum of Pharmacology having herbal medicines, a
traditional way of curing disease. Different dosage form of drugs like tablets, capsules, syrups are displayed for the students. Different medicines currently in use are also displayed according to their specific classification. Variety of approaches including lecture, tutorial, and practical are employed to provide flexible multi method learning opportunities. Regular class test and term tests are conducted to ensure effective training of the students for the professional examination. Internal assessment is calculated according to the obtained marks of these regular class tests. Special consideration is also given to the attendance of the students throughout the session. Seminars, small group sessions and quiz are also conducted and arranged to involve the students and to increase their interest level.
