Biochemistry

Modern biomedical sciences. The teaching strategies and methodologies of Biochemistry Department embody and encompass a fundamental approach to the chemistry of life and convey the strongly unifying contribution of molecular biology to other biomedical disciplines, according to the UHS and PMDC syllabi and guidelines. The teaching staff members are qualified, some with postgraduate qualifications with immense experience in teaching biochemistry.

Establishment of research on firm grounds is a hallmark of the department. Student’s participation in these endeavors is highly encouraged and appreciated. The college administration has extended complete support to the department in its research ventures. The

department is striving to achieve its academic goals and set higher ones as challenges for the future. Biochemistry department is facilitated with teaching and supporting laboratory staff, and equipped with furnished laboratory for qualitative and quantitative biochemical analyses according to the curriculum accredited by University of Health Sciences (UHS).

Teaching staff is groomed to take up the challenging teaching assignments set up by the Principal and Head of Department. Practical training of the subject has been devised and the focus has been shifted to diagnostic Biochemistry, in accordance with the UHS syllabus. Students are trained to perform laboratory experiments like renal function tests, liver function tests, cardiac profile, urinalysis, etc.

The laboratory has all types of modern and sophisticated laboratory equipment as per PMDC requirements. Department of Biochemistry has a well-equipped laboratory being managed by qualified and experienced technical staff. Biochemistry laboratory is equipped with all essential

lab equipment to perform experiments. The equipment includes centrifuges, controlled temperature water bath, spectrophotometer, hot air oven, magnetic stirrers, digital balance, electric water distillation apparatus and microscopes etc. The department follows a proficient and result-oriented teaching methodology which includes formal lectures, small group discussions (tutorials) and practical. Lectures are made interesting and easy-to-understand for the students by using multimedia aids along with related videos & animations, and power point presentations.

Participation from students’ part is encouraged to make the teaching/learning sessions interactive and productive. Students are evaluated in small group discussions, their shortcomings are highlighted and remedies for the same are suggested. Regular class tests encompassing all formats of assessment like MCQs, SEQs and viva voce are regularly conducted at the end of each topic. At the end of each term, the term tests and at the end of each academic year, a university standard send-up examination is conducted to constitute a rigorous examination drill for the students.
